Kevin Durant's Mom Rips ESPN's Stephen A. Smith For Double Standard

By Timothy Downs

ESPN provocateur-extraordinaire Stephen A. Smith and Kevin Durant have a bit of a schism going dating back to last year during the months leading up to Durant’s decision to join the Golden State Warriors.

Smith claimed on multiple occasions that he had inside information of what Durant would do in free agency while he was still a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Durant called Smith out, and Smith replied with what sounded to many like a threat.

“You don’t want to make an enemy out of me.”

Smith also called Durant’s pivot to Golden State, “The weakest move in NBA history.”

Fast forward to the 2017 NBA Finals, Durant’s mother, Wanda Durant, made an appearance on Smith’s own show, First Take.

Smith is currently dealing with the death of his mother, and was not on set.

After wishing Smith condolences, Wanda took him to task for some of the things he’s said about her son.

From theScore:

“I thought that was quite harsh,” Wanda Durant said. “Who are you Stephen A. to come at my boy like that?

“I think about when he came to ESPN, was that a weak move for him? He joined some more heavy hitters, right? To up his career, right? To do what was best for him, that’s what he did, right?

“Nobody called him weak for that, so why call my son weak for doing the same thing he did? Mama just saying.”

Smith could not offer a retort since he was unfortunately absent from the show due to a death in the family. Wanda kindly put aside any differences and offered her condolences before launching her point.

“I would like to send my prayers and condolences out to Stephen A. and his family. I know this is a difficult time for them. Let Stephen know that no matter what this is about, that we are still here for him.”

It’s hard to argue with the ‘Real MVP’.
