The Charlotte 49ers have seniors on their roster but the younger members of the rotation could cost the 49ers a win against the Xavier Musketeers on Wednesday night.
Sophomore guards Pierria Henry and Terrence Williams both average at least two turnovers per-game and their questionable shot-selection makes them a total liability against a Musketeers team that is particularly young themselves.
What’s more, Xavier is terrible at defending the 3-pointer, allowing at least five in each of its six losses.
Charlotte’s DeMario Mayfield has a fixation with shooting from beyond the arc but a 27-percent 3-point percentage says he should focus a little more effort into his inside game and get to the free-throw line.
Denzel Ingram and Victor Nickerson have a decent outside game but would give the 49ers much more punch as starters. They don’t foul and barely turn the ball over. The answer to Charlotte’s ball-security problems lies within this duo.
Luckily for the 49ers, Xavier players have growing pains of their own. Leading-scorer Semaj Christon (14.7 ppg.) averages a staggering 4.2 turnovers per-game and that can effect his shooting. That can’t happen because Christon is the guy that makes that offense go and when he has a bad night, it affects the whole team on the offensive side of the floor.
On the regular, though, the entire Musketeer rotation shoots better than 40-percent from the field and can be as good a team as any other in the country on offense. However, defending the 3 continues to be a problem but if the 49ers can’t capitalize on that, the Musketeers are on their way to a 5-0 start in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
