March Madness: Georgetown Will Win Big East Tournament, and More
There are many reasons the Georgetown Hoyas have been so successful during the 2012-13 season; great coaching, unselfish play, committed players, etc.
That all may be true, but the reason Georgetown will win the Big East Conference tournament, as well as the NCAA tournament is because of one player–Otto Porter Jr.
Porter’s talents haven’t be missed by basketball fans this seasons, his accolades on the court are what earned him the Big East Player of the Year honor. In the Hoyas’ 62-43 win over Cincinnati, however, we were able to see exactly why Porter will lead Georgetown to victory lane.
Not only is Porter the most talented player in the Big East when it comes to scoring, he may be one of the best distributors, too. Athleticism and unselfishness are rarely paired together when referring to budding superstars, but head coach John Thompson III has found that combination in Porter, and has capitalized on it.
Only twice this season has Porter failed to score double-digit tallies in points, and the guard has led the Hoyas in scoring in 15 of 17 games. His excellence on the court is the primary reason why the Hoyas are ranked No. 5 in the nation, and are fighting for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Porter is unique in the sense that he can really do it all. No pass, no shot, no defensive scramble is out of his skill set. At 6-feet 8-inches, it’s impossible to miss what Porter brings to Georgetown each and every game.
Less than two months ago, Georgetown was considered a “pretty good” Big East team, and now the Hoyas are one of the best teams in the nation. That was Porter. Not only did Porter rightfully deserve the honor of Big East POY, he should also be dubbed the best player in the nation. No player has been more influential to his team in the second half of the season.
Porter, and the Georgetown Hoyas, exemplify everything college basketball fans love. They encompass both David and Goliath this season, and have emerged from their turmoil as an outright favorite to win the Big East tournament, as well as the NCAA tournament.
