Predicting Iowa State Basketball’s Key Stat Leaders For 2014-15 Season By Andrew Skaggs PREV NEXT Predicting Iowa State Basketball’s Key Stat Leaders For 2014-15 Season Reese Strickland-USA TODAY Sports Iowa State is coming off their best season under head coach Fred Hoiberg after winning 28 games and reaching the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Despite losing both DeAndre Kane and Melvin Ejim, the Cyclones should contend with the top teams in the Big 12 this season. Let's take a look at who will lead Iowa State in the key statistical categories in 2014-15. 5. Scoring Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports 5. Scoring Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports With the departures of two of the top players in the conference in DeAndre Kane and Melvin Ejim, point forward Georges Niang will be responsible for a lot of the scoring for the Cyclones. Niang averaged 16.7 points per game last season before breaking his foot in the NCAA Tournament. The versatile forward has lost over 30 pounds in the offseason and could be considered the front-runner for Big 12 Player of the Year. 4. Rebounding Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports 4. Rebounding Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports Senior forward Dustin Hogue came alive during the NCAA Tournament last season for the Cyclones and will look to carry that momentum into 2014-15. Last season, Hogue averaged 8.4 rebounds per game, including 12 games in which he had double digit rebounds. With Big 12 Player of the Year Melvin Ejim gone, Hogue could average over 10 rebounds per game next season. 3. Assists Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports 3. Assists Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports The Iowa State backcourt got a boost this offseason when UNLV transfer Bryce Dejean-Jones chose to play his final year of basketball in Ames. Dejean-Jones was known as more of a scorer for the Runnin' Rebels, but he will have to become a facilitator for a talented Cyclones roster. Look for Dejean-Jones to improve on his three assists per game from last season. 2. Steals Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports 2. Steals Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports Sophomore point guard Monte Morris enjoyed a nice freshman season for the Cyclones last year and will look to take on an expanded role this season. Morris led Iowa State in steals last season, averaging 1.3 per game. With several talented guards returning to the Big 12, look for Morris to once again establish himself as one of the top defenders in the conference. 1. Blocks Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports 1. Blocks Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports Blocking shots was not a specialty for Iowa State last season as no one blocked more than 0.7 per game. Dustin Hogue profiles as a player who could be a talented shot-blocker thanks to his long arms and active athleticism underneath the basket. I wouldn't be surprised if Hogue blocks more than one shot per game in 2014-15.
