Every team in the Big 12 has now played at least two games in conference play and it’s becoming clear that any one of these teams can lose on any given night. This conference is loaded with seven top 25 squads heading into Week 10. In comparison to Week 9’s power rankings, eight of the 10 teams have shifted positions and a new squad holds down the No. 1 spot.

The Red Raiders fall to the last spot this week after losing their first three games of conference play. Those losses came against some of the conference’s best teams, Texas, West Virginia and Kansas, but none of the games were all that close. Texas Tech has now lost five out of its last six games and is trending downward.

9. TCU (13-3, 0-3) [Previous Rank: 8]

TCU also lost its first three games of conference play, which came against West Virginia, Kansas State and Baylor. The Horned Frogs have the edge over Texas Tech, however, due to their 13-0 start to the season. They also hold the top scoring defense and scoring margin in the Big 12 through nine weeks.

8. Kansas State (9-7, 2-1) [Previous Rank: 10]

The Wildcats were at the bottom of these power rankings all season, but it appears they’ve finally perked up now that conference play is underway. After losing their opener to Oklahoma State, they defeated TCU and a solid Oklahoma squad. Kansas State is still near the bottom of the Big 12 in several statistical categories, but this team is finally showing some heart.

7. Baylor (12-3, 1-2) [Previous Rank: 7]

The No. 22-ranked Bears dropped their first two Big 12 contests to Oklahoma and Kansas, but then defeated TCU in overtime to notch their first conference win. Baylor needs to improve its field goal percentage, as it ranks last in the conference in that category. It’ll face Iowa State and Kansas State in Week 10.

The Longhorns endured their worst week of the season and have fallen five spots in these power rankings, after being the top team last week. The team is now ranked 20th in the nation following surprising losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Their rebounding remains the best in the conference, but they’ve dropped to the middle of the pack in several other categories.

5. Oklahoma State (12-3, 2-1) [Previous Rank: 6]

Oklahoma State has now entered the top 25, as it is ranked 24th in the nation. It lost to Iowa State on Jan. 3, but was able to beat Texas easily in its next game. The Cowboys will face Kansas and Oklahoma in Week 10, which should be great matchups. We’ll likely learn if this team is a real Big 12 contender after this week is over.

The Sooners dropped a tough game to Kansas State in overtime last week, but they also registered great wins against Baylor and Texas to open conference play. Oklahoma has played the toughest schedule of any team in the conference and is already battle-tested. It’ll have two difficult games this week again, when it plays West Virginia and Oklahoma State.

3. West Virginia (14-2, 2-1) [Previous Rank: 3]

The No. 18-ranked Mountaineers lost a nail-bitter to Iowa State over the weekend by two points, but this team has been very consistent overall. They opened conference play with two easy opponents, TCU and Texas Tech, and will now face Oklahoma and Texas this week. Even with the worst three-point field goal percentage in the conference, West Virginia is ranked second in scoring offense and scoring margin.

2. Iowa State (12-2, 2-0) [Previous Rank: 4]

The Cyclones have started conference play with a bang, defeating Oklahoma State and West Virginia in Week 9. After suffering a devastating loss to South Carolina on Jan. 3, Iowa State rebounded nicely and proved it is still elite. Its offense has been consistently dynamic, ranking second in the entire nation in assists per game, 15th in points per game and 16th in field goal percentage.

Bill Self’s squad is back on top this week after beating Baylor and Texas Tech in Week 9. Their upcoming schedule will be extremely challenging, starting with Oklahoma State and Iowa State this week. Except for three-point shooting, the Jayhawks don’t do anything particularly well, but they are also not dreadful at any aspect of the game. Kansas is well balanced and starting to gain some steam.
