Big East Basketball Power Rankings: Week 13

The Big East has been a sneaky-good conference so far this season. With five teams in the RPI top 25 and seven in the top 45, the Big East should have quite a few teams still playing in mid-March. The top and bottom of this week’s rankings shouldn’t surprise anyone, but the teams in the middle are in a dogfight and should be swapping positions all season.

The Bluejays deserve credit for sealing their first conference win against St. John’s last week. However, that isn’t enough to drag them out of the Big East cellar that’s been their home all season.

9. Marquette Golden Eagles (10-11, 2-7)

The Golden Eagles’ disappointing season continues as they are in the midst of a five-game losing streak. With a tough stretch of road games this week against Villanova and Seton Hall, things likely won’t be looking up for the Golden Eagles anytime soon.

8. DePaul Blue Demons (11-12, 5-5)

8. DePaul Blue Demons (11-12, 5-5)

The Blue Demons have dropped their last three games. Although all three losses came at the hands of good teams, the losing streak is still disappointing for a DePaul team that was looking to make a run in conference play. The Blue Demons will be looking to gain some traction this week in a winnable game against Seton Hall before hitting the road to play Butler at the end of the week.

7. St. John's Red Storm (14-7, 3-5)

St. John’s rebounded nicely after a terrible loss to Creighton with a solid win over Providence. Last week was a microcosm of the Red Storm’s inconsistent season. With a tough remaining schedule, which St. John’s team are we going to see in the big games?

6. Seton Hall Pirates (15-6, 5-4)

6. Seton Hall Pirates (15-6, 5-4)

Seton Hall enjoyed a nice win over Xavier in Isaiah Whitehead’s return. The Pirates will be hoping to build off that and gain some momentum after a rough stretch in the freshman guard’s absence. If they can stay healthy, the Pirates will be a dangerous team in the last month of the regular season.

5. Xavier Musketeers (14-8, 5-5)

5. Xavier Musketeers (14-8, 5-5)

Xavier grabbed an impressive win over Georgetown to start the week, only to be brought down by a disappointing loss to Seton Hall. So goes the Musketeers’ season; there have been plenty of decent wins, but they’re always coupled with a bad loss. Xavier will be looking to reverse that trend with a stretch of winnable games in the next couple weeks.

4. Providence Friars (16-6, 6-3)

Big East 8

4. Providence Friars (16-6, 6-3)

Big East 8A

The Friars have looked good this season with strong wins over Georgetown and Butler. However, they still have a rough schedule ahead of them with two games against Villanova and rematches against the Hoyas and Bulldogs. How the Friars handle their remaining schedule will reveal whether or not their impressive start to conference play was fluke.

3. Georgetown Hoyas (15-6, 7-3)

Big East 9

3. Georgetown Hoyas (15-6, 7-3)

Big East 9A

Two losses to Xavier don’t look great, but Georgetown’s overall resume is impressive. The Hoyas got a big win over Villanova and none of their losses are too damaging. They have looked like one of the strongest teams in the conference, and they will be looking to sweep the season series against Villanova this weekend.

2. Butler Bulldogs (16-6, 6-3)

2. Butler Bulldogs (16-6, 6-3)

The Bulldogs have gone 5-1 in their last six games, with the only loss coming on the road against Georgetown. Butler had a tough schedule to open up conference play, and they struggled with it a bit. However, they have been coming on strong lately and have climbed all the way up to 17th in the RPI rankings. The Bulldogs will likely continue their hot streak this week with home games against St. John’s and DePaul.

1. Villanova Wildcats (19-2, 6-2)

1. Villanova Wildcats (19-2, 6-2)

Big East 11A

After dominating a relatively easy schedule last week, Villanova holds on to the top spot in the Big East. The Wildcats have been the team to beat all season, and they remain the favorite to win the conference. With a big game against Georgetown this weekend, the Wildcats will be seeking revenge after getting blown out by the Hoyas earlier in January. A win this weekend would solidify Villanova’s Big East supremacy.
