Virginia vs. Syracuse: Game Preview, Prediction

The Virginia Cavaliers are the No. 2 team in college basketball and have deserved it from day one. Virginia has taken every obstacle in their path and turned it into wins. The Cavaliers are the best and most consistent team in the ACC and should be one of the favorites for the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

However, the Cavaliers’ next opponents, the Syracuse Orange, may be the most dangerous team that they will face until March Madness begins. These two teams face off on Monday, Mar. 2 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Syracuse punished themselves by banning the team from postseason play, and whether you think that this decision was right or wrong, that means that this is basically the most important game of their season. They have no opportunity to win any type of trophy, so knocking off the No. 2 team in the nation and likely the favorite behind the Kentucky Wildcats for the national championship would be a way to end their season on a high note.

That being said, it’s going to take a massive effort to upset a team as defensively sound as Virginia. This team does everything right and it shows in their record. Rakeem Christmas and Trevor Cooney will have to have the game of their lives to break down Tony Bennett’s defense.

As crazy as this sounds, I’m calling an upset in this one. I firmly believe that the Cavaliers are the only team in the country that can take down Kentucky, but I also think that Syracuse’s motivation to win this game will be far superior to that of Virginia. It will be close, but the Orange pull off a spectacular upset to cap off their disappointing season.

Prediction: Syracuse 60, Virginia 58
