2015 NCAA Tournament Profile: BYU Cougars

By Trevor Lowry

Record: 25-9

RPI: 38

BPI: 30

Conference: West Coast Conference

How They Qualified: At-Large Berth

Region: No. 11 seed in the West

The BYU Cougars stormed into the WCC tournament. They didn’t just win their last six games of the regular season, though, they managed to beat the Gonzaga Bulldogs as well, which is big time.

If it wasn’t for that late charge down the stretch, we probably wouldn’t be talking about the Cougars right about now. Well, NIT fans might be. BYU had a solid season overall, but it was the win over Gonzaga that separated itself from other bubble teams.

What You Need to Know:

Leading Scorer: Tyler Haws (21.9 PPG)

Leading Rebounder: Kyle Collinsworth (8.7 RPG)

Leading Passer: Kyle Collinsworth (5.8 APG)

Bad Losses: San Diego

Good Wins: Stanford, Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga

BYU puts up a lot of points. In fact, it is ranked No. 2 in the country when it comes to points per game (83.6). Haws is a big reason behind that. The senior may not be putting up as many points as he did last year (23.2 PPG), but 21.9 per game isn’t too shabby. Another player to watch out for on this team is Collinsworth.

He may not be averaging 20+ points per game, but he is capable of dropping that many on any given night, and is a very important piece on this team.

Regardless, BYU knocked off the Bulldogs, so they can certainly knock off anyone in the NCAA tournament — as long as that offense is firing on all cylinders.

The BYU Cougars are dancing!
