On Monday, fans in the small town of Murray, Ky., found out that their local university was losing its head basketball coach to a bigger school. That’s because the Iowa State Cyclones have hired Steve Prohm, the now former head coach of the Murray State Racers, to be the new head coach in Ames.

For Murray State, it’s a story that they have seen many times before. It started in 1985 when head coach Ron Greene left to become head coach at Indiana State. His successor, Steve Newton, had an outstanding run at Murray State before leaving to become head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Murray State replaced Newton with Scott Edgar, who used an outstanding five-year run to propel himself into the head coaching position at Duquesne.

After Edgar, Murray State hired Mark Gottfried, who was an assistant with the UCLA Bruins at the time. Gottfried was just 31 years old when he got the job, but he proved to be up to the task, continuing the Racers’ string of winning. That eventually led to Gottfried leaving to become head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Murray State then had something strange happen. They hired Tevester Anderson as their head coach and he didn’t leave to take a bigger, better job. Instead, he resigned from the job before landing at Jackson State.

To replace Anderson, Murray State hired a young Rick Pitino assistant named Mick Cronin, who became a success in Murray and eventually left to take the job as head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats.

After Cronin came Billy Kennedy, who used his success to land the head coaching job for the Texas A&M Aggies. He was succeeded by Prohm.

Prohm’s announcement is not a surprise, especially to the people of Murray, who have heard this song before.
