New Mexico Basketball: Early 2015-16 Outlook

The New Mexico Lobos struggled in the 2014-15 season despite the No. 31 ranked defense in points allowed per game, and wins over several teams who went to the 2015 NCAA tournament. Inconsistency and an inability to score hindered them throughout the season.

However, UNM comes into the 2015-16 potentially with one of the most explosive scorers in the Mountain West Conference. Cullen Neal showed flashes of greatness in the few games he was able to play before succumbing to an ankle injury. With the team’s two leading scorers finishing up their collegiate careers, Neal’s return might be a necessity for the Lobos to make a splash in the MWC.

Next to Neal, New Mexico returns a huge portion of their youth. Two of the team’s upperclassmen left in the offseason, so the Lobos will be forced to work with an extremely young lineup. This may result in an erratic 2015-16 season, but could lead to a major breakthrough in the 2016-17 season.

Another major key to this team’s success next season will be the play of Obij Aget. The South Sudanese center has the potential to dominate, but needs to work on avoiding fouls and finishing at the rim. A 7-foot-1 center, he could quickly become a nightmare for anyone to guard.

Overall, New Mexico’s season is hard to determine. However, the Lobos continue to improve and bring in upper-level three-star and four-star recruits, meaning that a jump from being a mid-tier Mountain West team to the top of the conference standings is just a few young players stepping up away. Watch this team to improve as the season goes along, especially in the MWC tournament.
