2016 NCAA Tournament: Villanova Must Remain Focused After Kansas Win

By Taylor Sturm

In a fantastic game, the Villanova Wildcats upset the No. 1 overall seeded Kansas Jayhawks in the Elite Eight. Forcing Kansas to play their style of basketball, they won through solid, consistent play and grit, something that this team has done all season long.

Now, fresh off a win over the best team in the country from the regular season, Villanova will have to face off with the best player in the country. Buddy Hield and the Oklahoma Sooners are waiting – a trip to the national championship game in the offing.

Nova will be grateful to have been able to play a team like the Jayhawks this early in the tournament and get knocking off the top seed marked off their checklist. If not for a loss to the Seton Hall Pirates in the Big East tournament, the Wildcats might find themselves facing Kansas in the championship game rather than the Elite Eight.

Villanova, however, must be wary of their huge win over a storied program like Kansas, especially since this is the first Big East team in the Final Four since conference realignment. The last thing this Wildcats squad will want to do is become this season’s Wisconsin Badgers.

Last season, the Kentucky Wildcats looked unbeatable. Some people actually believed they could have beaten the Philadelphia 76ers. Wisconsin came in and got a huge, emotional victory over the Wildcats, and then promptly got dominated by the Duke Blue Devils in the national championship game.

Although these Jayhawks are not at all last year’s Kentucky, they were still a formidable No. 1 overall seed. The Wildcats must focus on what they have done all season instead of what they just accomplished and get the job done.

Jay Wright and Co. look like they deserve to win a national championship, but there is work to be done yet.
