Ranking the Top 30 College Football Programs from National Signing Day 2013

open
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

So before you get all crazy about how great your team did or how every coach needs to be fired immediately at your school following National Signing Day, let’s take a minute to think about the worst teams in the recruiting game of 2013.

Let’s remove our hats and say a quiet prayer for theses schools...

San Jose State Spartans, Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, North Texas Eagles and the UMass Minutemen...

None of these school were able to muster even a Three-Star recruit today. Nothing but a bunch of slow, Two-Star Projects who are probably just happy to be playing football.

So remember before you open your mouth or comment at the water cooler tomorrow, things could be a lot worse for you school.

In all, 2714 kids signed a National Letter of Intent today. Of those, 33 were Five Stars, 322 were Four Stars and 1147 were Three Stars. The rest were those deemed with only a pulse by the experts who live and breath high school football.

Now this list doesn't include Alex Collins whose mom running around South Florida with his NLI because she is all ticked off he chose the Arkansas Razorbacks over the Miami Hurricanes.

And we thought Robert Nkemdiche’s mom was the cooky one...

So with all that being said, what is the best way for one to determine who did the best work today? It as easy as a formula...

Each team gets to multiply the number of recruits signed today by 2, multiply by 25 the number of Five-Stars, multiply by 10 the number of Four-Stars and multiply by 5 the number of Three-Stars. Add that number together and you get a quick look at who did the best and who did the worst.

So let’s jump in and take a look at the Top 30 Recruiting Classes from the 2013 National Signing Day

2 of 32

No. 30 - Kansas Jayhawks -- 163 Points

30
Peter Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas Jayhawks looked a lot better in the recruiting game in the second go around for Charlie Weiss.

Kansas picked up Four-Star DE Chris Martin and DT Marquel Combs along with 19 Three Star kids.

A solid class that should go a long way in helping boost the Jayhawks chances.

3 of 32

No. 29 - Virginia Cavaliers -- 164 Points

29
Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

Somehow, some way, the Virginia Cavaliers and Head Coach Mike London pulled a couple of big names on Wednesday.

Leading the pack is Five Star RB Taquan Mizzell out of Virginia Beach, Virginia and a pair of Four Star DB studs in Kirk Garner and Tim Harris.

Now let’s just see if London has what it takes to coach them up and win some games in 2013.

4 of 32

No. 28 - Tennessee Volunteers -- 167 Points

28
Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

First year Head Coach Butch Jones did an excellent job on National Signing Day keep the commitments focused as the Tennessee Volunteers were able to nab five Four Stars and 15 Three Stars.

The Four Stars in OL Austin Sanders, Athlete Jalen Reeves-Maybin, WR Marquez North, WR Paul Harris and DE Jason Carr will have have a quick and major impact on what will be a young and explosive Volunteer squad in 2013.

5 of 32

No. 27 - Virginia Tech Hokies -- 168 Points

27
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Head Coach Frank Beamer had a solid 2013 recruiting effort as the Virginia Tech Hokies landed Five Star DB Kendall Fuller to highlight 19 signings.

Joining Fuller are a trio of Four StarsHollan Fisher, QB Bucky Hodges and DE Wyatt Teller.

After a down year in the ACC in 2012, it looks like the Hokies have reloaded nicely in 2013.

6 of 32

No. 26 - Oregon Ducks -- 168 Points

26
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Chip Kelly leaving for the Philadelphia Eagles was a real blow to the 2013 recruiting efforts of the Oregon Ducks.

Recruits were left wondering how much the offense and defense would change under new leadership and it showed with the Ducks landing only one Five Star talent in RB Thomas Tyner.

Add seven Four Stars and seven Three Stars to the list of just 19 signees and one can see why the Ducks’ Dynasty might be coming to an end.

7 of 32

No. 25 - Arizona State Sun Devils -- 168 Points

25
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Head Coach Todd Graham put together a nice recruiting class on Wednesday as the Arizona State Sun Devils inked 24 players overall.

Leading the list of signees are three Four Stars in LB Chans Cox, DE Marcus Hardison and LB Viliami Latu.

Add 18 Three Star recruits and things are looking good for the Sun Devils in the depth department in 2013.

8 of 32

No. 24 - Pittsburgh Panthers -- 174 Points

24
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Panthers seem to be using their move to the ACC already to their advantage as they put together 27 signees in the Class of 2013.

Leading the group is Five Star OL Dorian Johnson and Four Stars in WR Tyler Boyd and QB Tra’von Chapman.

Add 15 Three Star signees and Pitt added some solid depth to a very young and talented team.

9 of 32

No. 23 - Mississippi State Bulldogs -- 176 Points

23
Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports

Despite the rival Ole Miss Rebels stealing all of the thunder in the state of Mississippi on Wednesday, Dan Mullen and the Mississippi State Bulldogs were still able to put together as solid class for 2013.

A total of 23 players signed NLIs on Wednesday including Five-Star DE Chris Jones and Four Stars in WR Fred Ross and QB Cord Sandberg.

It isn't Ole Miss, but it will do for Mullen and the Bulldogs.

10 of 32

No. 22 - Oklahoma Sooners -- 176 Points

22
Richard Rowe-USA TODAY Sports

For the first time in like the history of the world, not a single team in the Big 12 signed a Five Star recruit on Wednesday.

But despite that loss, the Oklahoma Sooners did manage to ink six Four StarsThree Stars.

No quite the day Bob Stoops is use to, but you know he will take it and get these young men ready to play.

11 of 32

No. 21 - Cal Golden Bears -- 177 Points

21
James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

And one of the surprises of the day was the Cal Bears and new Head Coach Sonny Dykes.

The Bear picked up three Four Star recruits in QB Jared Goff, DB Darius Allensworth and RB Khalfani Muhammad to go along with 19 Three Stars.

Very solid job by Dykes to keep these guys committed through the coaching changes.

12 of 32

No. 20 - Utah Utes -- 181 Points

20
James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

A lot of the experts had the Utah Utes around No. 40, but the numbers don’t lie when it comes to the volume of Three Star Recruits.

The Utes signed only one Four Star in WR Andre Lewis. But with Lewis Utah inked 23 of those Three Star guys.

And you can’t go wrong when you bring in 23 athletes on that level.

13 of 32

No. 19 - West Virginia Mountaineers -- 186 Points

19
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

So what is Dana Holgrosen’s plan after Gino Smith?

Well it was mainly to put together a balanced class that featured a pair of Four Stars and 22 Three Stars for 2013.

The big hits are WR Shelton Gibson andLDB Darrien Howard.

But to be honest all eyes will be on Three Star QB Chavas Rawlins.

These eyes will be on RB Wendell Smallwood for obvious reasons...

14 of 32

No. 18 - South Carolina Gamecocks -- 194 Points

18
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Well, the Old Ball Coach put together another solid class for the South Carolina Gamecocks for 2013.

Steve Spurrier inked eight Four Stars and 14 Three Stars.

No super big names this time around, but it seems to be the perfect class that Spurrier wants.

He even went out on a limb today and stated, “The last time Urban Meyer had the top recruiting class in the nation it forced him to retire with the Florida Gators.

You gotta love Steve...

15 of 32

No. 17 - Nebraska Cornhuskers -- 195 Points

17
Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

Bo Pelinii has a solid class for 2013 with some great depth as the Nebraska Cornhuskers signed five Four Stars and 19 Three Stars.

But the jury will be out on this class to see how good it can be because it is the Big 10.

16 of 32

No. 16 - Clemson Tigers -- 196 Points

16
Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

The Clemson Tigers did miss out on some big Five Star recruits on National Signing Day but based on what Dabo Swinney did put together was pretty awesome.

The Tigers were able to ink 10 Four Stars and 10 Three Stars that will go a long, long way in giving Clemson the depth it desperately needs to compete on the national level with the SEC.

In fact, Four Star DB Mackensie Alexander could be the nasty, lock-down corner the Tigers have been searching for the past few seasons.

17 of 32

No. 15 - Vanderbilt Commodores -- 202 Points

15
Dak Dillon-USA TODAY Sports

Whatever James Franklin is doing for the Vanderbilt Commodores the rest of the country needs to be sitting down and taking notes.

There is no doubt playing in the SEC is a huge recruiting tool, but for Vandy to pull five Four Star and 20 Three Star guys is simply amazing.

Who would have thought they would have seen the day Vandy is a Top 20 recruiting machine? As long as Franklin is there, it will be.

18 of 32

No. 14 - Washington Huskies -- 203 Points

14
Steve Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Huskies did a great job in reloading on Wednesday as it signed seven Four Star and 17 Three Star recruits.

Great depth added to a team that could make a lot of noise in the Pac 12 in 2013.

19 of 32

No. 13 - USC Trojans -- 215 Points

13
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

At one point in time entering Wednesday, Lane Kiffin had amassed the No. 1 recruiting class in all of the country coming to play for the USC Trojans.

At the end of the day, though, there were about 10 guys who decided to take their talents elsewhere for a number of different reasons.

But despite only signing 12 players on the day, Kiffin did something no one else in was able to accomplish...

USC ended up with five Five Star and seven Four Star recruits.

What USC lacks in numbers is easily made up in the incredible talent inked on Wednesday.

Now everyone will wait and see just how Kiffin will go about in messing them up.

And it is hysterical the data ranked the Trojans at No. 13...

20 of 32

No. 12 - Florida State Seminoles -- 227 Points

12
Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Without a question, it is officially safe to say Jimbo Fisher has the Florida State Seminoles back and relevant nationally in the recruiting game.

Despite losing a number of coaches in the final days of the 2013 recruiting season, Fisher was able to sign 21 kids including a pair of Five Stars in DB Jalen Ramsey and LB Matthew Thomas.

Add nine Four Star and nine Three Star recruits and the ‘Noles seem to be back to their old ways of just reloading the talent.

21 of 32

No. 11 - Auburn Tigers -- 253 Points

11
John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest stories of National Signing Day was the ability of the Auburn Tigers to put together a tremendous staff despite the complete turnover of power in the program.

Head Coach Gus Malzahn ended up with 24 kids signing including a pair of Five Stars in DT Montravious Adams and DE Carl Lawson. Both Adams and Lawson are great kids to build a defense around and both happen to be in the Top Five of all players and positions in the 2013 class.

The hiring of Rodney Garner away from the Georgia Bulldogs seems to be the biggest coop in this years recruiting battle.

Add nine Four Stars and 13 Three Stars to the mix and the Tigers will be back in the mix in the SEC in 2013.

22 of 32

No. 10 - UCLA Bruins -- 267 Points

10
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

There is no question Jim Mora is a great recruiter.

And this was clearly evident at the UCLA Bruins were able to sign 18 Four StarThree Star recruits on Wednesday.

All great talents that will add tremendous depth to the mix for 2013.

23 of 32

No. 9 - Michigan Wolverines -- 284 Points

9
Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

There are a lot of services that have Brady Hoke and the Michigan Wolverines as one of the top classes in the country in 2013.

And it’s hard to argue that as Michigan did add Five StarRB Derrick Green.

The Wolverines did add 16 Four Stars and nine Three Stars on the day.

But the list of signees were from right around Michigan and the last time anyone checked the powers in the SEC did not have very many kids on their roster from anywhere in the North Central United States.

24 of 32

No. 8 - Ohio State Buckeyes -- 290 Points

8
Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Well kudos to Urban Meyer in his successful plan for the Ohio State Buckeyes to recruit like an SEC team.

Meyer was able to go to Georgia and pull Five Star DB Von Bell and down to Texas to ink Five Star LB Mike Mitchell.

Even a good many of the 16 Four Stars and six Three Stars were from the backyard of a lot of SEC schools.

But was it enough to be the top one or two class in the country...

Nope...

Not even close...

25 of 32

No. 7 - Ole Miss Rebels -- 294 Points

7
Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

The biggest story of National Signing Day in 2013 was what Hugh Freeze was able to do with the Ole Miss Rebels.

This class, by far, is the greatest recruiting class ever put together at Ole Miss.

Leading the group is the top player in the country and Five Star stud DE Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s top WR in Five Star Laquon Treadwell and the nation’s top OL in Five Star Laremy Tunsil.

That’s the best players in the nation at their position spread out on offense and defense. Add to those three nine Four Stars and 15 Three Stars and it is easy to see why they are still partying in The Grove today.

26 of 32

No. 6 - Florida Gators -- 299 Points

6
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Florida Gators did one of the best jobs of any team in addressing its needs with its 2013 recruiting class on Wednesday.

Head Coach Will Muschamp was able to add Five Stars Alex Anzalone and Vernon Hargreaves III on the defensive side of the ball along with 14 Four Stars and 11 Three Stars.

Every position was address for the Gators and there is a long list of play makers on this 2013 team.

27 of 32

No. 5 - Georgia Bulldogs -- 299 Points

5
Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

Yes folks...

The Georgia Bulldogs not only have a Top 10 class in 2013, they inked a Top 5 one.

Head Coach Mark Richt was able to add 32 players to his team that was literally one play and five yards from a National Championship in 2012.

Georgia fans will tell you how terrible this class was because they missed out on every Five Star stud in the state. But, if you take a look at the talent in the 15 Four Stars and 17 Three Stars the Dawgs did sign, things couldn't be better for the football team in Athens, Georgia.

But the greatest thing about this class for the Bulldogs is that 13 of the 32 are already enrolled in classes right now and will know the playbook by the Spring Game which means they will be ready to go and contribute immediately come September.

28 of 32

No. 4 - Texas A&M Aggies -- 306 Points

4
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

No other school benefited more in the 2013 recruiting battle from the SEC and the Heisman Trophy than the Texas A&M Aggies.

And that is an understatement too folks...

There is no doubt the Aggies would have never been able to put this class together if they were still in the Big 12 whether or not Johnny Manziel was the stud that he was in 2012.

But when you put Johnny Football, the SEC and Texas A&M all together you end up with a tremendous recruiting class.

A&M ended up with 16 Four Star and 16Three Star recruits signed that will begin to build one heck of a foundation for the next few years.

And a class that could be a huge supporting cast in a National Championship run in 2013.

29 of 32

No. 3 - Notre Dame Fighting Irish -- 318 Points

3
Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Brian Kelly put together a very balanced 2013 class for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Wednesday.

Leading the list of signees are four Five Stars in RB Greg Bryant, DB Max Redfield, LB Jaylon Smith and late last night DT Eddie Vanderdoes.

Mathematically speaking, the signing of Vanderdoes took Notre Dame from No. 7 all the way up to No. 3.

The Irish also added 14 Four Stars and six Three Stars making them one of the best classes in the nation in 2013.

Whether you like it or not, Notre Dame is back!

30 of 32

No. 2 - Alabama Crimson Tide -- 320 Points

2
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

At this point who really wants to argue whether the Alabama Crimson Tide have the No. 1 or No. 2 class in the country.

Nick Saban could probably get every Two Star recruit in the nation and find a way to win a National Title.

But Saban has a lot more than Two Star guys as he inked four Five Stars, 13 Four Stars and eight Three Stars on Wednesday.

Leading the class of 2013 is DE Jonathan Allen, LB Reuben Foster, TE OJ Howard and DT A’Shawn Robinson.

Just a beast of a class to go along with the best talent returning in all of College Football

31 of 32

No. 1 - LSU Tigers -- 321 Points

1
Derick Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Yes folks...

The Mad Hatter found a way to eek out an extra point to take home the Top Recruiting Class in 2013.

Les Miles was able to get 28 total signed on Wednesday for the LSU Tigers including Five Star DE Frank Herron and Five Star DB Tre’Davious White.

In addition, LSU was able to cover depth at ever position with 17 Four Star studs and nine Three Star athletes including a pair of quarterbacks in Anthony Jennings and Hayden Rettig.

Just a great class that should get more respect now and one that will in 2014 and 2015.
