Spring Practice Set To Begin For The Oklahoma Sooners

A new year usually means new beginnings – a chance to start over and improve. The Oklahoma Sooners are doing just that when it comes to the start of 2013 football. Spring workouts were scheduled to start on March 6, but have been pushed back to March 9. The March 9 date just happens falls on the same day as a scheduled Junior day for potential recruits now.

Sooner fans everywhere wanted change on the coaching staff and change is exactly what they got. Unfortunately with change comes the removal of some familiar faces on the coaching staff, but I think the new hires added much-needed energy and excitement to a staff that had been together for a long time.

Head coach Bob Stoops nailed it with the new line coaches: both Jerry Montgomery and Bill Bedenbaugh are up-and-coming and intense to say the least. The final piece of the puzzle was picked up late last week when Jay Boulware was hired to coach the tight ends and help out with the special teams.

As I talked about a couple weeks ago, the quarterback race is going to be one to watch. The offense is still loaded; it’s just the question mark above the quarterback position that has people wondering how they will fare in 2013. This is the first time in several years that there isn’t a clear choice going into spring workouts. Also, the rumored shift to a 3-4 defense from a 4-3 should be very interesting to see.

The defensive line is in definite need of a face-lift after the 2012 season; just take a look at the rushing yards from opposing teams. I’m hoping that Mike Stoops and the hiring of Montgomery will light a much needed fire into some of the players and get back to the days where the Sooners defensive line was a force. There could possibly be several freshmen on the defense that will go in and make an instant impact.

Some questions should be answered in the upcoming weeks on where and what the Sooners will look like going into the Summer. The Spring game is scheduled for April 14 at 2:00 CST.
