The South Carolina Gamecocks have high hopes for the 2013 season, and one of the remaining questions from fall camp was answered on Tuesday.

Mike Davis will get the call as the starting running back for the Gamecocks this season. Davis beat out redshirt freshman Brandon Wilds for the starting job, according to running backs coach Everette Sands.

Davis could be an important cog in the South Carolina offense this season. As a true freshman last year, Davis earned 52 carries and rushed for 275 yards (5.3 yards per carry), with a pair of touchdowns. His best game last season came against the UAB Blazers, when he rushed four times for 84 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown.

Steve Spurrier has used the running game effectively during his time in Columbia. Of course, it helps when you have a running back like the departed Marcus Lattimore. But if Spurrier continues to use the running game as he has, Davis will be called upon quite often.

The South Carolina offense should be solid again this season. Quarterbacks Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson both had their moments last season. Both are expected to play again this season, each bringing a different dynamic to the offense. Shaw will be called on to be the running quarterback primarily while Thompson is more of a pocket passer.

South Carolina’s defense, led by All-American defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, is expected to be one of the best in the Southeastern Conference this season. It will be up to the offense to hold up their end of the bargain. If both units come together, this could be a special season in Columbia.
