Kentucky Wildcats: What We Learned In Week 6, What To Look For In Week 7
The Kentucky (1-4, 0-2) offense found something toward the end of the South Carolina game, but it was too little, too late and the Cats’ first SEC win eluded them. The Wildcats fought back from a 21-0 deficit only to lose 35-28 to the 13th-ranked Gamecocks.
“It was good to see the offense find their rhythm, move the ball and get into the end zone,” Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said. “I was proud of that. I felt like if we could have gotten another stop defensively, we would have given ourselves a chance to score at the end.”
The comeback took flight after halftime when Demarco Robinson scored on four-yard pass. South Carolina’s Bruce Ellington fumbled the next kickoff and the Wildcats cashed in on the turnover with a Jalen Whitlow touchdown pass.
The Gamecocks quickly responded with a touchdown of their own to extend the lead to 35-21.
Kentucky, though, wasn’t done as Whitlow completed passes to Jordan Aumiller for 22 yards and Javess Blue for 33 yards to move the ball to the Gamecocks two-yard-line. Whitlow then tightened the score one last time on a touchdown run with 4:02 to go.
The Wildcats, however, were unable to get that final defensive stop, as South Carolina ran out the clock. Still, Kentucky’s unwillingness to quit and its much-improved ball security (no turnovers) provided some light in an otherwise dark offensive situation so far this season.
What to look for in Week 7: Will the Wildcats’ offensive turnaround last longer than two quarters? Last week, Kentucky’s offense found itself the latest beneficiary of South Carolina’s recent defensive inability to close out games. This week, the Wildcats host No. 1 Alabama, which has not allowed a touchdown in three-straight games. Will Kentucky become the Tide’s fourth-straight offensive victim?
