Texas A&M Aggies: Johnny Manziel Eliminates Hope for Heisman Repeat

John Reed, USA TODAY SPORTS

Heading into Saturday’s action, the race for the Heisman Trophy seemed to be within the grasp of Johnny Manziel for the second straight year. However, the quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies may have blown his chance with a poor effort in Saturday’s loss to the LSU Tigers.

Manziel was facing the LSU defense of 2013, not the LSU defense of 2011 or 2012. However, it was tough to tell the difference on Saturday. The Tigers held Manziel in check for the entire game, allowing just 10 points to an A&M team that had scored at least 40 points in 13 straight games. A&M’s only points came in the second quarter of the game.

For his part, Manziel was not very good in this game. He connected on just 16-of-41 through the air for 224 yards, with just one touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed 12 times for 54 yards. Not the type of numbers that fans are used to seeing from the highlight reel-producing sophomore standout.

By having such an average game, with a national audience watching him on CBS, Manziel probably blew his chances to repeat as the Heisman winner. After seeing his performance on Saturday, then comparing him with Jameis Winston of the Florida State Seminoles, it would be tough to give Manziel the edge.

Manziel does have one game remaining, next week against the Missouri Tigers.  But at this point, it appears that he is going to need some small miracle, and/or a lot of help from Winston, to win the Heisman for the second straight year.
