BCS Standings: Auburn Tigers Have Case for BCS National Championship
The Auburn Tigers pulled off one of the most exciting finishes ever in the Iron Bowl to pull off the upset of the Alabama Crimson Tide. The win catapulted Auburn into the SEC game next week against the Missouri Tigers and up to the No. 3 ranking in the latest BCS standings. While they currently sit just outside of the BCS National Championship conversation, they have a strong case to be one of the top two teams in the BCS standings no matter how the undefeated teams ahead of them finish the season.
If Auburn wins against the Missouri Tigers in the SEC title game, it will give them back-to-back wins over top-five opponents. They have also quality wins over the Texas A&M Aggies and Georgia Bulldogs this season on their way to their improbable turnaround in 2013. That is as impressive a resume as anyone in the country this season. They have done everything they can to prove their value on the field this season with more impressive performances than anyone in the country.
The Ohio State Buckeyes, meanwhile, saw their strength of schedule take a hit over the weekend. Coming into the weekend, the Wisconsin Badgers was the marquee game on the Buckeyes’ resume. Outside of that win, there hasn’t been any performance that really stands out as proof that Ohio State is one of the best teams in the country. That quality win was dampened when the Badgers lost this weekend, putting the upcoming game against the Michigan State Spartans as the only marquee game on the Buckeyes’ resume.
But even a win over the Spartans isn’t as impressive as Auburn’s win over Alabama or their possible win over Missouri. There’s no disputing the impressiveness of Auburn’s wins this season. The only question will be if they are impressive enough to overcome their loss this season?
