Gary Pinkel: Texas Longhorns Should Consider Missouri Tigers’ Head Coach
The Missouri Tigers have had an outstanding 2013 season, winning the Southeastern Conference‘s Eastern Division and playing in the SEC Championship Game in only their second year in the league. Mizzou put up a good fight in the SEC title game before losing to the Auburn Tigers, 59-42.
With such success comes many rumors. It was thought that Mizzou head coach Gary Pinkel might be a candidate for the head coaching position with the Washington Huskies after Steve Sarkisian left to become head coach of the USC Trojans. But Pinkel denied any interest in the job that was formerly held by his mentor, Don James.
However, there is now another opening for which Pinkel might be a good fit, and that’s the job as head coach of the Texas Longhorns. For many years, Pinkel has been at a school where he has good facilities and support, but he could get a considerable upgrade if he were to take the job in Austin. And Pinkel is a proven winner in the Big 12 Conference, where Missouri had considerable success in the late 2000′s.
Pinkel’s name is not one that has been regularly mentioned with the Texas job. However, the general feeling in the media is that the Longhorns are going to struggle to hire the big name that Texas fans want. What athletic director Steve Patterson should be focused on is getting the best coach available to return the Texas program to the top of the Big 12 and to a competitive state in the country. If that’s the direction Patterson chooses to go, Pinkel should be on the list of candidates.
