Bold Predictions Midway Through the College Football Season

Entering the 2014 college football season, I doubt many fans predicted two Mississippi schools to be ranked in the top three, let alone the top 25. Lo and behold, two schools from the Magnolia State are ranked in the top three. This season has put on quite the show. Luckily, it is only halftime.

Midway through 2014, let’s take a look at 15 bold predictions.

If the season ended today, Dak Prescott would be crowned the Heisman Trophy winner. Something tells me that will still be the case when the season finishes.

Florida State passed its biggest test of the season against Notre Dame. On paper, that was the toughest contest of the year for the Seminoles. They shouldn’t have a problem running the table, which would result in a spot at the King’s Table at season’s end.

Wasn’t it only a couple of weeks ago when everyone was counting out the Big 10? Well, it is looking like Michigan State has a great shot at making the CFP if it can go undefeated from here. However, Ohio State may have a shot as well if it can have the same destiny. The two teams will battle it out on Nov. 8. That one will decide quite a bit.

The SEC West is so good this year, which will end up hurting the conference in the long run. The teams in this conference will continue beating up on each other, which will result in the SEC champion being the only worthy contestant for the playoff.

11. TCU Wins the Big 12

TCU has a solid defense and offense. Some teams have one or the other — not the Horned Frogs. They may have lost to Baylor, but they looked great against Oklahoma State this past weekend, and will end up winning the Big 12 title.

Rakeem Cato just broke a record for throwing a touchdown in 39 consecutive games. He may play for Marshall, but if he can continue to put up impressive stats, and if the Thundering Herd continue to win, he will be very hard to deny. He won’t win the Heisman this year, but being a finalist is not out of the question.

Speaking of Marshall, if it can run the table, it very well could end up finishing in the top five. That is if top 10 teams continue to fall on a weekly basis.

8. Auburn Loses 2 More Games

Auburn is without a doubt one of the best teams in the nation. That doesn’t mean the team doesn’t have a brutal schedule, though. The Tigers still have to take on South Carolina, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Georgia, Samford and Alabama. Between those six, Auburn will lose two more times. Call me crazy, but I think it is safe to say we can throw Samford out of the mix.

7. Colorado State Cracks the Top 25

As it stands, Colorado State is on the verge of cracking the top 25. That doesn’t happen all that often. This probably would have seemed crazy entering 2014, but the Rams will continue to win, and will enter the top 25 at some point this year.

Oregon still has a good chance of making the playoff, but when it is all said and done, I am predicting the Ducks, along with every other Pac-12 team, to have at least two losses. So far, the Pac-12 has just been beating up on one another, and that will not stop.

Indiana’s Tevin Coleman is leading college football with 1,192 rushing yards. Melvin Gordon has 1,046, but expect him to have a big second half, and to lead the country in rushing yards when it is all said and done.

The Iron Bowl was the best game of the season last year. That very well could be the case this year once again. Regardless, Alabama will get revenge by knocking off Auburn this time around.

3. Arizona State Wins the Pac-12 South

To win the Pac-12 South, Arizona State will have to beat out teams like USC, Arizona, Utah and UCLA, but I am predicting this team to not lose another game until the Pac-12 championship. For what’s it’s worth, the Sun Devils have beaten USC and Stanford in back-to-back games.

2. Mississippi State Wins the National Championship

It’s hard to go against the Mississippi State Bulldogs right now. After all, they arguably have the best player in the country in QB Dak Prescott, and have beaten three top 10 teams (at the time). It helps that the Bulldogs are currently at the top of the rankings. Not just one, but both of them.

This is more inevitable than anything, but a worthy team or two will be left out of the College Football Playoff, and then a storm of complaints will come in from the fans. Should be a great bowl season regardless.
