The Oregon Ducks made the smart decision extending the contract of head coach Mark Helfrich to $17.5 million over the next five years.

Despite the Ducks falling short of expectations during the 2014 college football season with their loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff National Championship, Helfrich has done a tremendous job for the program since being promoted from offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach to head coach in 2013. In fact, he has posted an impressive 24-4 record over the past two seasons, which is something Oregon should cherish.

“Mark has provided tremendous leadership of our football program and the values and character that he insists upon are in line with our mission as an institution,” Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said in a statement, according to ESPN. “The success of our student-athletes on the field and in the classroom will continue with Mark’s leadership and we are thrilled that he will stay at home in Oregon for a long time to come.”

After beating the Florida State Seminoles in the College Football Playoff, Helfrich’s contract automatically extended one year due to incentives imbedded in his deal. His new contract has a similar incentive in which he will get a one-year addition as long as the Ducks win 11 games in a season. The catch is one of the 11 wins has to be in one of the six major bowl games played on New Year’s Day. He also will have a several million-dollar buyout if he decides to leave for a new coaching job between now and 2020, which is how long his extension lasts for.

At 41 years old, Ducks fans have to be ecstatic about Helfrich being with the team for the foreseeable future. The amount of success he has brought the football program will only continue. This is especially true now he has the status to back up the recruiting.
