The Florida Gators held their Orange and Blue game on Saturday, and the game may have actually produced a bit of substance. Unlike some school’s spring games, this one was highly-anticipated in Gainesville for a couple of reasons.

First of all, this was the first public appearance for the team under new head coach Jim McElwain, who was hired to change the culture around the Gators’ program. And while Saturday’s game would not remind anyone of the days of Steve Spurrier in Gainesville, the offense did look much better than it did last season.

The other big reason for anticipation on Saturday was to see where Florida is with its quarterback competition. The battle between Will Grier and Treon Harris is ongoing, but Florida fans were hoping to see a clear leader emerge during the spring game.

For once, fans of a team may have gotten their spring game wish. It’s evident that Grier is ahead of Harris at this point. Grier was eight-of-11 passing for 136 yards on Saturday, showing an accuracy that will allow him to be successful in McElwain’s offense.

Harris struggled at times, although he did throw the game’s only touchdown pass, hitting redshirt tight end C’yontai Lewis for a score.

McElwain opted to not name a starter after the game on Saturday, but it was clear to everyone in attendance that Grier is the man to beat right now. Plus, he simply fits the system better than the dual threat Harris.

If Florida is to improve this season, quarterback is the number one priority to get fixed. With Grier’s play on Saturday, it appears that Florida is moving in the right direction.
