Michigan State has commanded the respect of college football in recent years, having won back-to-back January bowl games and a conference championship. But can they keep it going another season? Here are five bold predictions that argue that they can.

5. Delton Williams Will Have Breakout Season

In the shadow of senior tandem Jeremy Langford and Nick Hill, Williams rushed for 316 yards and five scores on 54 carries in 2014. Williams, now a junior, is 6-foot-1 and 228 pounds, which is bigger than Langford or Hill. He’ll get his touches this year and will wear defenses down with his size and strength.

4. Connor Cook Will Have Another Big Year

Tony Lippett and Keith Mumphery may be gone, but that doesn’t mean that Michigan State doesn’t have talent waiting in the wings. Cook has Aaron Burbridge, Macgarrett Kings Jr. and Josiah Price at his disposal. Cook was only sacked 11 times in 2014, and Michigan State returns most of their starters on the offensive line. He will have plenty of time to throw.

3. Defense Won't Miss A Beat

Michigan State’s secondary lost a good deal of players to graduation or the NFL after last season. However, the front seven should be outstanding. Defensive end Shilique Calhoun is back for his senior season. Calhoun had 39 tackles last year and that total is only going to go up in 2015. Junior Riley Bullough returns at linebacker, so the pass rush will be a force to be reckoned with.

2. Spartans Will Beat Oregon

The Spartans controlled the first three quarters of last year’s game with Oregon in Eugene. This year, it is in the friendly confines of East Lansing. Michigan State may have lost a few players on both sides of the ball, but so did Oregon. You can bet that this game has been circled on the schedule, and Sparty is looking for revenge. Only this time, Super Mariota won’t be there to save the Ducks.

The Spartans had arguably the most exciting bowl game last season when they overcame a 20-point deficit against Baylor in the Cotton Bowl. They’ll be back in another New Year’s Six Bowl after the 2015 season. Perhaps this year Connor Cook adds Fiesta Bowl MVP to his illustrious career after playing his last game for the green and white.
