5 Reasons Why Temple Would Be Perfect Landing Spot For Everett Golson

Somewhere, Everett Golson is making a list and checking it twice. The former Notre Dame quarterback is immediately eligible to play this fall after his graduation from the South Bend school. If Golson wants to check off all the right boxes on that list and be really happy about playing college football again, then he needs to look no further than Temple. Here are five reasons why.

While Temple has a very talented quarterback in P.J. Walker, he has been inconsistent. As a freshman, Walker threw for 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions, but he followed that up with a sophomore slump that produced only 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Walker could learn a lot by watching Golson for one season. Golson’s body of work is considerably better.

Presumably, one of Golson’s major goals in transferring out of Notre Dame is to better prepare for the NFL draft, and in Temple quarterback coach Glenn Thomas, the Owls have hired a guy who was the quarterback coach for the Atlanta Falcons the past few seasons. Since Matt Ryan has turned out to be okay, a relationship with Thomas can only enhance Golson’s NFL profile.

With a spread offense focusing on a renewed emphasis on the running game to set up the play-action passing game, Golson should get plenty of protection in the pocket to find open receivers like John Christopher—shown here stiff-arming first-round NFL draft choice Byron Jones of UConn. This will help him make explosive plays down the field and not have to take off and run so much when plays break down.

The Owls return 20 starters, including All-America linebacker Tyler Matakevich, from a bowl-eligible team last year. This includes all 11 starters from a defense that was fourth nationally in the most important statistic, fewest points allowed. All the Owls need is an effective offense to raise that win total from six to double digits, and Golson would make them immediately legitimate on that side of the ball.

Notre Dame is on the Temple home schedule this fall, and a crowd of 70,000 is expected at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field for that game. Even though Golson said the right things upon leaving ND, he has to harbor at least a little animosity toward former coach Brian Kelly. Having Golson start at quarterback for the Owls against the Fighting Irish and leading them to a win would make for not only an upset, but a powerful statement.
