The Oregon Ducks have a reputation for elite cornerbacks in recent years, including All-American Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, now gone to the NFL. The Ducks may not have to wait too long to find their next great cover-man, however, after securing the commitment of 2016 cornerback Jared Mayden over the weekend at The Opening.

Mayden is rated as a four-star defensive back recruit and is one of the most offered DBs in the 2016 recruiting class. He ultimately chose Oregon over the Ohio State Buckeyes after spending his time at The Opening with current Oregon commits Brady Breeze, Theo Howard, and La’Mar Winston. The 6-foot-0, 198-pound corner out of Sachse, Texas, also had offers from programs like the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida State Seminoles, Texas Longhorns, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, among numerous other Power 5 programs.

Oregon’s coaching staff played a key part in the recruitment of Mayden as the young defensive standout cited the opportunity to learn from a celebrated defensive backs coach and the chance to play for a program with coaching stability. The Ducks have a reputation for keeping their assistant coaches for 20-plus seasons which provides a comforting level of consistency for players like Mayden.

He will come to Eugene as one of the highest-rated defensive back recruits the program has ever signed and will have the opportunity to find a role sooner rather than later. With Oregon’s penchant for fielding elite cornerbacks that find their way to the NFL, big things appear to be in store for the extremely talented Jared Mayden. Will he help the Duck defense take it to another level in the near future?
