College Football Recruiting: Greg Little Decommitment Major Blow to Texas A&M

Kevin Sumlin and the Texas A&M Aggies had been enjoying a strong 2016 recruiting class in the early going with several top recruits verbally committing to come to College Station to play their college football. That class, however, took a major hit with the news that Greg Little, the No. 2 overall rated prospect and No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2016 class, was backing off from his commitment to the Aggies.

The 6-foot-6, 290-pound lineman had been committed to A&M for nearly a year up to this point but that commitment had appeared to be softening as of late. During The Opening, Little told reporters that his commitment to Texas A&M was a “soft commitment” and that he was taking the time to check out other programs. He had already taken visits to the Alabama Crimson Tide and Ole Miss Rebels this summer with trips to the Ohio State Buckeyes and Auburn Tigers on his schedule.

Sumlin had allowed Little to explore other programs, likely confident that the Aggies were the best fit for the young man and knowing that placing restrictions on him after such an early commitment would likely only push him away from the program faster. Little took advantage and told reporters at The Opening that it would only take a strong connection to a coaching staff or university for him to walk away from the Aggies.

His decision to step back from Texas A&M puts one of the elite prospects of the 2016 class back on the market which should heat things up on the recruiting trail this summer. Some of the top recruiters in the nation will be going head-to-head for his services and will be laying a full-court recruiting press on the young man in the coming months.

Little has said he wants to make his official announcement on November 4, his birthday, and will be weighing all his options up until that point. Will the Aggies be able to regroup and bring the elite offensive line prospect back into the fold?
