As an exercise in objectivity, let’s argue the merits of LSU for the no. 1 seed. Their pedigree in the SEC certainly makes a strong debate for strength of schedule. QB Brandon Harris has shown the naysayers that the Tigers’ offensive line has more depth than the titanic Leonard Fournette.

The only question about LSU is whether they can win out in the SEC West. The Tigers still have some massive obstacles in their path to claim the SEC West berth and a chance at the SEC championship. Namely, they have to get by both Alabama and Ole Miss. If, however, they win both of these games they would have a high number of quality wins, a deciding factor in the playoff puzzle.

Much like this year’s Clemson team, LSU was considered a second-rate team in the SEC, behind Alabama, Auburn and Georgia. Yet the Tigers’ explosive offense, led in part by the unstoppable force that is RB Fournette, now has the no. 4 rushing team in the country with over 300 yards per game. Even against their toughest competitor this year, Florida, Fournette proved himself to be the human equivalent of a Sherman tank and rushed 31 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns.

While the Tigers have had a few close calls at Mississippi State and Florida, both of those games were against ranked opponents. This is in marked contrast to Ohio State’s lethargic performances against myriad mediocre teams this season.

LSU heads to Tuscaloosa next Saturday for its toughest test all season against Alabama. If the Tigers dominate, the playoff committee should make a spot for LSU at the top.
