Both The Georgia Football Program And Mark Richt Will Be Fine

It’s almost impossible to figure out when the temperature began rising on the seat Mark Richt was sitting in, but it feels like his job has been on the line for ten years. Richt was relieved of his duties on November 29 following a 9-3 record with the Georgia Bulldogs in 2015. Many reports state the Georgia program and Richt mutually agreed to part ways, but the truth is rumors have been surrounding his job security for as long as many college football fans can remember. He leaves the program after leading them to bowl eligibility once again.

Throughout his 15-year career with the Bulldogs, Richt compiled a 145-51 record and won almost 75 percent of his games. He won at least ten games in a season nine times and owns a 9-5 bowl record. Richt won the SEC East six times, but unfortunately for him the Bulldogs typically ran into a better team in the championship game where he holds a record of 2-4. Richt would come out on top in both 2002 and 2005, and it was also during those years that he would also win SEC Coach of the Year honors as well.

The Bulldogs have struggled to maintain that level of sustained dominance over the past few years though, and college football is ultimately about what you’ve done for the program lately. Maybe it’s time for a new voice in Georgia. Maybe Richt needs a change of scenery as well. Either way, both sides will be fine. Richt is an excellent coach.

The Bulldogs are a fixture in the top programs in the country when it comes to recruiting. It will be interesting to see where both sides go from here.
