Georgia Will Regret Firing Head Football Coach Mark Richt

After 15 seasons as the head football coach at the University of Georgia, Mark Richt has been fired by the university following a 9-3 season in 2015. While the move isn’t necessarily shocking, I believe the school will live to regret it.

Since arriving in Athens, Richt has put together a 145-51 career record and consistently had one of the top recruiting classes in the country every year. The timing of the move is a bit shocking as he was able to lead the Bulldogs to nine wins this season with his best offensive player Nick Chubb missing half of the season and not getting any consistency out of the quarterback position.

In 2015, Richt would’ve had Chubb returning, along with one of the top quarterback recruits in the nation, Jacob Eason, enrolling at the school. It will be interesting to see if the Bulldogs can keep Eason’s commitment with a change at head coach. If he ends up backing out, the firing of Richt could come back to haunt athletic director Greg McGarity.

The good news for McFarity is that Georgia instantly becomes one of the top jobs in America. Outside of USC, and possibly Texas if Charlie Strong gets fired, there isn’t a better job opening for prospective coaches. Georgia is one of the biggest hotbeds when it comes to recruiting and has plenty of backing from boosters. McGarity shouldn’t have any problems getting one of the top coaching free agents to come to Athens.

As for Richt, he shouldn’t have any shortage of suitors when it comes to other openings. He should instantly become one of the hottest commodities on the market, and I’d love to see him end up at Miami to see what he can do with that floundering program.
