Alabama‘s Derrick Henry got most of the love this year from the press and winning one of the most publicized awards in college football certainly didn’t hurt his already stellar numbers. Granted, the kid has speed and a great deal of talent, yet Keenan Reynolds of Navy may be the best player in the game.

It’s not just the tallies in the team’s win column — although those are indeed impressive. Reynolds took his team to an 11-win season for the first time in that storied program’s history. It is the fact that Reynolds has taken just about every award and blown away every statistic in the NCAA. He should have won the Heisman, frankly.

For example, his remarkable 48-yard run in their bowl game against Pitt shattered the FBS record of career rushing yards by a QB. He now holds the FBS record for the most rushing touchdowns in a career, as well as the most total TDs in a career with a monster 88 TDs. He ranks fourth all-time for TDs in a season with 31 and No. 1 with the most games in which he scored three or more touchdowns. In all, Reynolds was in the top-five in eighteen different NCAA categories. Yes, eighteen.

He also shattered just about every record in Navy football. Considering he didn’t even start playing until late in his freshman season — he was a fourth-string QB before then — the numbers are even more extraordinary. And you can add all of that to the Naval Academy’s stringent academics, strict honor code and the daunting admissions requirements. Before Reynolds walked off the field for the final time in his college career, he converted three third downs and drew the Panthers offside on a fourth-and-3. Reynolds wrapped up his already remarkable career in a magnificent fashion. Heisman or not, Reynolds will be remembered as one of the best football players in FBS history.
