Tyrone Culver is Back in the Fold

Tyrone Culver is back with the Miami Dolphins. The ‘Phins are experiencing a lot of injuries to their defensive-backs which prompted bringing Culver back into the fold.

Culver was cut just prior to this season starting. He spent 2006 with the Green Bay Packers, and then the last four seasons he was a Dolphin. Culver got a lot of time on special teams, and also in dime packages. That is likely where we will see him for the final four games of the 2012 season.

Culver has 78 career tackles (71 with Miami). He had one interception in 2008, and one in 2009. Culver had a sack last season. He started six total games for Miami, four of those were last season.

Culver was born in California, and played his college ball in Cali too (Fresno State) so this weeks game at San Francisco is a homecoming of sorts for him (Miami vs San Francisco 49ers game preview is HERE…article on Miami vs west coast is HERE). He is 6’1″and right around 200 pounds.

The Dolphins have been forced to play a lot of zone lately and that should fit Culver’s skill-set. He is solid with his tackling technique which is a big deal for Joe Philbin and Kevin Coyle so we see why they were wanting to bring Culver back to the team once the depth in the secondary became an issue.

He runs the 40 yard dash with approx 4.61 speed. Culver’s footwork needs to improve, especially when needing to change directions quickly to stay with a WR that is making cuts/moves.

Culver’s tackling, plus ability to contribute on special teams made him a great choice to bring back to the team. He can help the secondary and special teams which are lacking depth currently.

Miami may not be adding a stud here, but they are surely adding a motivated player who is looking to earn a job going forward and who will be pumped to return to California this weekend.

Miami is going to have several off-season decisions to make regarding their secondary. Culver is hoping to get himself into those conversations.
