The Best of Green Bay Packers GM Ted Thompson

One of my favorite things to watch is when Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson gets caught with a camera in his face. The man was not made for the media. He obviously does not enjoy interviews and speaks to reporters with a grim, necessary-evil expression. Let's just say that he makes head coach Mike McCarthy look like a ham.

Fans don’t typically hear much from Thompson, but every once in a while, he’s forced to come within striking distance of a camera, such as at the NFL Combine. Reading some quotes from Thompson from this year’s Combine made me think of some of his best lines. Within Thompson’s succinct quotes, there’s often the faintest glimmer of sarcasm (on handling criticism: “This is a big-boy league.”) or even a sense of humor (on when the Packers needed a kicker by: “Sometime around the second week in September."), try as he might to hide it.

Packer fans appreciate Thompson’s behind-the-scenes, no-nonsense personality. It fits the organization, it fits the team, it fits the city.

Let’s get to know a little bit more behind the “man with the poker face,” as Donald Driver called him. Ted Thompson played linebacker in the NFL with the Houston Oilers for ten years. From 1992-1997, Thompson worked for Green Bay’s scouting department before moving on to the Seattle Seahawks, where he served as Vice President of Operations until 2004. 2005 saw him back in Green Bay in his current post. He took over the position from Green Bay’s then-head coach Mike Sherman (whom he fired the next year). Prior to the Packers’ 2010 Super Bowl season, Thompson was generally known to outsiders as the Big Meanie Who Pushed Brett Favre Out of Green Bay (or, alternately, The Guy Who Finally Rid Green Bay of That Diva Headache).

Personally … well, there really isn’t anything much known about Thompson personally. You pretty much have to extrapolate from his brief comments. So, whether because they are funny or ironic, or to the point, here are Ted Thompson’s best quotes:
