5 New York Jets That Should Not Have Been Cut

5 Jets That Should Not Have Been Cut

Now that the 53-man roster cuts for all 32 teams in the NFL are complete, there are many players on the street looking for jobs. Some of them deserve to get the axe, while for others, it was simply a numbers game.

If there are a plethora of players on a team’s roster at a certain position, sometimes the team is forced to cut someone they know is a good player. In other cases, teams can either undervalue or overlook players, cutting them when they can provide a significant impact on the football team. This, although not often, does happen in the NFL, as guys like Danny Woodhead have been sent packing in the past, only to produce in a big way when they catch on with another club.

For whatever reason, sometimes players end up being released when they can still be of service to their respective team. This is what I believe will occur with some of the players released from the New York Jets this past Saturday.

Although the Jets will not be able to contend for a Super Bowl title in 2013, they still need to make the right decisions when it comes to personnel moves.

As far as I am concerned, the team let several players go that could have been solid starters for them.

With all of that said, here is a list of five players who in my opinion, did not deserve to get cut from the Jets. I will start with former Alabama Quarterback and third-stringer for the Jets, Greg McElroy.

5. Greg McElroy

Although McElroy was released by the Jets because of an injury, he was still a very productive college player that has potential in the NFL. The team should have kept him for the future. He is only in his third year and as a result, was claimed by the Cincinatti Bengals, who placed him on their practice squad. This cut could hurt the team in the end.

4. Ben Obomanu

As for Ben Obomanu, he has potential as well. He has been somewhat productive in the NFL despite never being a receiver high on the depth chart. He has never caught 40 passes in a season, yet has averaged nearly 14 yards per catch in his career. A team with a mediocre offense like the Jets should be keeping Obomanu. They are the last team that should cut proven receivers.

3. Mohamed Massaquoi

Mohamed Massaquoi is a player similar to Obamanu. Although he doesn’t jump out at you for his ability, given his minimal role in his career with the Cleveland Browns, he too, has potential. Like Obomanu, he has never had 40 catches in a season but has 1,745 receiving yards and a 14.8 yards per catch average in his career. The Jets’ offense could have used him this year.

2. Jason Smith

Jason Smith, although he could be considered a draft bust, is a better Right Tackle than Austin Howard, who the team has to replace him. Smith is a durable player who, with the exception of his rookie year, played in all but one of his team’s games in his career. Smith was a guy that could have provided solid blocking support in the run and pass game for the Jets.

1. Dan Carpenter

As For Dan Carpenter, he is simply a better kicker at this stage of his career than the Jets’ current starter, Nick Folk. Folk made less than 78% of his attempts a year ago for the Jets, while Carpenter hit over 81% of his kicks for the Miami Dolphins. Also, Carpenter made five Field Goals from more than 50 yards out, Folk only made three from that distance.
