While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers currently stand at an absolutely dreadful 0-4, there is no doubt that the boys from the Bay house one of the NFL’s most lethal defensive secondaries.
With Bucs CB Darrelle Revis leading the unit as arguably the single most talented cornerback in the entire league, safeties Dashon Goldson and Mark Barron, AKA ‘The Bash Brothers‘, round out Tampa’s hard-hitting, lightning-fast secondary. And just to pile on even more elite talent, Bucs rookie second-round pick CB Johnthan Banks has proven to be a massive asset in their defensive corps also.
Well, Philadelphia Eagles second-year QB Nick Foles will be in the unenviable position of facing off against this gruesome four-some in Sunday’s Week 6 showdown. After Eagles starter QB Michael Vick pulled up lame with an injured hamstring last week against the New York Giants, Foles is very likely to get the starting nod in Week 6 as Vick is expected to sit.
Not only do Eagles’ fans already have an unexplained love for Foles, but the sophomore put together a glorious second-half output against the Giants, totaling 197 yards through the air and two fourth quarter touchdowns on 16 of 25 passing. More importantly, Foles did not commit any turnovers.
But rest assured, Eagles’ fans, Foles will be facing a whole different animal against this Buccaneers’ secondary on Sunday, so don’t expect the same sort of domination. While the Giants have one of the most horrific pass defenses in the league, the Bucs have proven very capable of completely shutting down opposing quarterbacks. Foles will have to choose wisely when tossing into this defensive backfield, because any small mistakes will quickly turn into oh-so-costly takeaways.
Be prepared to see Foles struggle mightily against this Bucs’ defense, despite his unprecedented praise and all-too recent triumphs.
