Philadelphia Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers: Clay Matthews’ Return Is A Big Boost

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

It looks as though star linebacker Clay Matthews will make his awaited return to the Green Bay Packers lineup. This is a huge boost for the Packers and their defense. Without their leader and best player in Aaron Rodgers, they are going to need all the help and reinforcements they can get ahead of their tilt with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Matthews has missed the past month with a broken thumb. While the Packers have had success without him, the defense could certainly use his pass rushing prowess back. The timing is impeccable. The Packers need to stay afloat and competitive without Rodgers in the lineup. One way to do that is for the defense to carry the team.

Matthews can help lead the charge. He basically commands a double team every time he steps out on to the football field and that will certainly be the case Sunday. This should free some of the Packers other defenders up to make plays and create turnovers.

Back up Quarterback Seneca Wallace will rely on the running game and his defense, as it doesn’t look like he is capable of winning a game by himself like Rodgers. The Packers are going to have to rally as a team around the injury and all 53 men will have to contribute.

The NFC North is as tight as it gets right now with three teams having identical records. For the Packers to stay in the race, the defense is going to have to play at a whole different level than it has. Lucky for them, they get their defensive stud back just in the nick of time.
