The New Orleans Saints knew that they were going to be able to move the ball well on Sunday Night Football as they faced off with the Dallas Cowboys in week 10 of the 2013 NFL season. After all, they were coming up against one of the worst passing defenses in the league this season. Give Drew Brees that type of opportunity and he’s going to produce.
Production seem to, in fact, come extremely easy to Brees on Sunday night as the Saints rolled to a 49-17 win over the Cowboys. Brees completed 34 of his 41 passing attempts for 392 yards while also throwing for four touchdowns and no interceptions. Obviously Brees was set to have a big night and delivered. However, the Saints rushing offense, who has struggled most of this season, surprised a ton of people against Dallas.
Pierre Thomas continued what has been relatively solid production as of late on Sunday night as he took 17 carries for 87 yards and a garbage-time touchdown as the Saints were running out the clock. The biggest surprise, though, was the fact that Mark Ingram took his 14 carries for a ridiculous 145 yards and a score.
There are obviously a lot of factors to consider here. Sean Lee, Dallas’ best defensive stopper, left this game with an injury. Moreover, the Dallas defense was obviously concerned with Brees and New Orleans’ passing game. However, you can’t deny the numbers that the Saints’ backs put up.
If the Saints can get even half of the production that they got from Ingram going forward, they will be incredibly difficult to stop this season. Circumstances may not be as favorable as they were on Sunday night for the Saints’ running game, but this game was a positive sign.
