Entering the day, the Philadelphia Eagles had not won a game at home in over a year; 413 days to be exact. The Philadelphia faithful were growing restless with the performances that were being turned out and pressures were continuing to mount about how long it would take to break the winless streak.
Wait no longer.
The Eagles jumped out to a 24-point lead behind the consistently stellar play of Nick Foles, who still has yet to throw an interception on the season, and the dual-threat attack of LeSean McCoy. Although Foles didn’t throw a touchdown pass on the day, he was able to run for one. McCoy took care of the rest carrying the ball for 77 yards and two touchdowns and adding another 73 yards receiving. Entering the fourth quarter with a substantial lead, it seemed inevitable that the Eagles would overtake sole possession of first place in the NFC East.
Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins didn’t make it easy, though, mounting a comeback, but in the end, the Philadelphia defense came up big again. Brandon Boykin was able to intercept Griffin as the Redskins made a final effort to take the lead and the Eagles were able to hold on. Once again, for a sixth week in a row, the defense was able to keep the opponent to 20 points or fewer. In addition, unlike last season, the Eagles were able to continue producing turnovers, gaining two more today on Boykin’s interception and a fumble.
The Eagles now sit atop the NFC East with the Dallas Cowboys idle on the bye week. Philadelphia will now get some much-needed rest in order to give some injuries a chance to heal, preparing for a final run at the division.
If the offense can stay consistent and the defense continues to improve, the beneficial situation the Eagles have set, may just turn out to be enough for them to produce a division title in Chip Kelly’s first season in Philadelphia.
