NFL Seattle Seahawks

Back To Basics For The Seattle Seahawks

The term “basic” by definition means to form an essential foundation or starting point, and for the Seattle Seahawks, that means smashing defenses in the mouth as they run the football right down their throats. Starting in Week 7 against the St. Louis Rams, Marshawn Lynch and the Hawks will get back to basics.

Percy Harvin was supposed to take the offense to the next level, but incorporating Harvin’s skill set into Darrell Bevell’s playbook made it more complex, yet less effective. The Seahawks won the Super Bowl because they were the most physical and feared team in the NFL, but they have gotten away from that this year.

There is a lot of reports floating around about Harvin’s attitude being a big reason as to why Seattle decided to cut its losses now. It is difficult to dispel all the reports, because it was a proven issue while Harvin was with the Minnesota Vikings. The other reason, however, is because Harvin presented an identity crisis for the Seahawks. That crisis is no longer a concern for Bevell and the Seahawks.

Seattle will now get back to doing what they do best, which is feeding Beast Mode and letting Russell Wilson crush spirits with his big-play ability through the air, and on the ground. The formula may be a simpler one, but it is also the one that will make defenses once again hate playing Seattle.

The Hawks took a lot of pride in being the most physical team in the NFL last season, on defense, as well as on offense. That pride has been lost this year, and I honestly think it started with Harvin. Last season it wasn’t just players like Kam Chancellor that was striking fear into opponents, but it was receivers like Golden Tate that would lay defenders out with a nasty block. Seattle may be troubled with key injuries, and they may not have Tate anymore, but that shouldn’t stop them from regaining the identity that made them so deadly in the first place.

The Seahawks will let the defenses throughout the league know this Sunday that the constant short screens and creative plays to No. 11 are over. No, now they are getting back to running defenders over until they can be stopped, if they can be stopped at all.

The Rams are the first up. Good luck with that!
