Put simply, the New York Jets can’t continue to pretend that Geno Smith is a decent NFL quarterback. After a three-interception performance this past weekend, it’s time for the Jets to start looking elsewhere for their quarterback of the future. Currently at 1-7, Gang Green should have their pick of the litter when the 2015 NFL Draft rolls around.

Here’s a quick look at five college quarterbacks who could be replacing Smith next year.

Connor Cook, Michigan State

With a quarterback like Cook, all of the physical tools and confidence are there for him to succeed in the NFL. Unfortunately, his footwork and ability to perform under pressure are still works in progress. However, if he can prove that he’s on the path to alleviating those issues, Cook could be an option in the early second round. Even if he’s still adjusting those aspects of his game, he’d be a better starter than Smith.

Jameis Winston, Florida State

Winston in the Big Apple might not be the best idea, but he’s certainly a capable quarterback in terms of talent. The polarizing prospect has an excellent arm and plenty of athleticism, but needs to improve his footwork and could do better with his decision making both on and off the field. Winston would certainly help the Jets at quarterback, but adding millions of dollars in a big city like New York to his plate might be too risky.

Brett Hundley, UCLA

Of all of the quarterbacks on this list, Hundley may be the biggest project. However, considering what the Jets currently have under center, drafting the UCLA product wouldn’t be the worst option. He’s a big, athletic quarterback who moves well in the pocket and displays a powerful arm. If he can continue to improve on his decision making and accuracy, there’s no reason he can’t successfully supplant Smith in New York.

Dak Prescott, Mississippi State

At this point, Prescott is more of a second-round option. If the Jets don't like what's available in the first round, they could choose to upgrade a different position and aim for a quarterback on Day 2. Prescott is a promising young talent who has emerged as a star in 2014. His passing still needs some work, but he’s a proven leader who excels at using his feet to make plays. Replace one second rounder with another?

Marcus Mariota, Oregon

Obviously this would be the ideal choice for the Jets considering Mariota’s draft status and obvious potential to develop into a franchise quarterback. The Ducks’ signal caller has displayed outstanding arm talent, athleticism and football IQ throughout his career, and does a great job of avoiding turnovers – something Smith isn’t exactly a fan of. If the Jets continue to tumble, Mariota could be available when they’re on the clock.
