The Curious Case of Corey Washington

After losing Victor Cruz and having a Ruben Randle injury scare, it’s time for the New York Giants to utilize another rookie.

Corey Washington is an undrafted free agent rookie who signed with the Giants after getting cut by the Arizona Cardinals. In August, Washington had a Cruz-like preseason that landed him a roster spot. He scored a touchdown in every preseason game that he played in. Washington showed that he has the ability to a game changer. The question is, why isn’t he getting any playing time?

The most action Washington has seen was garbage time against the Indianapolis Colts. In that garbage time, Washington caught every pass thrown to him, including a touchdown. Some may argue that it was against some of the Colts’ backup players, but he still made some pretty tough catches. The Giants could use a man like him as a regular starter, especially since their wide receivers have had a case of the “drops” lately.

Washington would be a nice complement to fellow rookie Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham has been so effective that he has been drawing double coverage from opposing defenses. Washington would be able to slide right in and make a play in a situation like that. He plays every down as if it was his last game; the undrafted rookie is clearly eager to prove himself.

Critics are complaining that the Giants are not playing to Eli Manning strong suit. The Giants rarely pass the ball deep in this new West Coast offense, which eliminates one of Manning’s positive aspects. Washington would be perfect as a deep ball threat with the way he plays resembles his former teammate John Brown. Brown is a living highlight real of plays that Washington could be making.

For the remainder of the season, the Giants play teams that are weak against the pass. Having two game changers at wide receiver could do a lot of damage. This year seems to be the year of the rookie wide receiver, so why not give it a shot?
