It isn’t often a loss can be partially pinned on an elite quarterback like Drew Brees.

The veteran New Orleans Saints signal caller proved Monday night that he is human, as the Saints continue to endure a rough season that finds them somehow in the NFC South division title picture. Brees threw for 420 yards and three touchdowns in his team’s 34-27 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, but was sacked four times by the Ravens’ defense and threw one interception.

That interception, unfortunately, was returned 44 yards for a touchdown by Will Hill. It was a costly pick-six that played a part in the Saints’ disappointing defeat. It doesn’t mean Brees is washed up or on the downside of his career, though. All this proves is that Brees is human and Baltimore’s defense is pretty good.

Dan Marino, John Elway, Joe Montana, Brett Favre … all of these quarterbacks had a bad game once in a while. Peyton Manning, regarded by many people as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, had a Super Bowl in January that he would rather forget. So while Brees may have had one painful interception that muddled a decent offensive performance, it shouldn’t spoil the team’s season.

The Saints are 4-7 overall, but through the magic of a rotten division, they are still tied for first place with the Atlanta Falcons. With five games remaining, New Orleans can still finish 9-7 and give themselves a great chance of making the playoffs.

That isn’t likely given the state of the Saints this season, but Brees can be human and the Saints can still blow a game or two and be among the leaders in a dismal division.
