Travis Kelce Is Key To Kansas City Chiefs Win Over Denver Broncos

Travis Kelce Key To Chiefs Week 13 Victory Over Broncos

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs are fourth in the NFL in rushing yards per game and ninth in the league in rushing attempts per contest. The Denver Broncos‘ defense allows the second fewest rushing yards per game and allows only 3.4 yards per rush. Something is going to have to give for the Chiefs to be able to upset the Broncos this weekend, and the player that is going to have to be the focal point of the offense is going to have to be tight end Travis Kelce.

The Chiefs are going to have to find other ways to beat the Broncos than the running game, and Kelce has proven to be their best receiver thus far this season. The first time the teams played in Week 2, Kelce had four catches for 81 yards, his second highest yardage total of the season. Kelce was still raw early in the season and wasn’t playing as many snaps as he is now, especially with the health of Anthony Fasano in question.

The way to beat the Broncos’ defense is through the air, and more specifically throwing to the tight end. The Broncos have allowed the second-most receptions to the tight ends this season (65) and are allowing the eighth-most yards (646). Over the last four weeks, these numbers are even worse as they have allowed the most receptions (25) and fourth-most yards (229).

Kelce started the season as a cornerstone of the offense, catching three touchdowns in his first five games while averaging 55 yards and four catches a game. However, after the Chiefs’ bye week, his production has dropped off, averaging only 45 yards and 3.5 catches per game to go with only a single touchdown reception in six games. If the Chiefs want any chance of defeating the Broncos this weekend, they are going to have to take advantage of the mismatch Kelce provides and ride him to a victory.
