The New York Jets quickly moved to replace the recently fired Rex Ryan on Tuesday night, hiring Todd Bowles as the new head coach of the team.

Bowles has reportedly signed a four-year deal with the organization.

He has more than 20 years of working experience in the NFL and NCAA, including serving as interim head coach of the Miami Dolphins back in 2011. Recently, Bowles served as defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals (2013-14) and Philadelphia Eagles (2012). He has also gained NFL experience, primarily as a defensive coach, with the Jets, Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers.

I believe this is a great move for the Jets. It’s no secret that they desperately lacked any kind of direction on defense this past season, finishing 4-12 on the year and allowing more than 30 points in six of their 16 games. Bowles has two decades worth of coaching experience on the defensive side of the ball and has been long overdue for his shot to prove that he can be a head coach in this league. Now he is getting his chance to shine in the Big Apple.

Granted, the Jets have a lot of work to do and it will take Bowles time to right the ship. It will not happen overnight, but if the Jets are patient and allow him to develop the team over time, I think Gang Green and its fans will be very satisfied with this decision in the long run.
