Last offseason, the New York Giants signed the most free agents in the NFL, and to many peoples surprise their biggest area of focus was cornerback. Walter Thurmond was one of the guys they signed, and the Giants expected a lot from him. Thurmond instead suffered a season ending injury in week two so the Giants never really got to see what their deep group of cornerbacks could do together.
The Giants offered Thurmond a three-year deal in free agency, but he instead decided to take a one-year deal in hopes that he would have a great year and make himself a ton of money. That obviously didn’t happen for Thurmond, but he is once again a free agent and the Giants need to do everything they can to re-sign him.
Thurmond was a member of the Legion of Boom with the Seattle Seahawks when they won the Super Bowl in the 2013 season, when he served as their slot corner. The Giants view him as one of, if not the best slot cornerback in the league, and that is not an unfair assessment.
Some have argued that Thurmond was the Giants’ biggest piece in the secondary for 2014, even with the signing of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The latter isn’t a lockdown corner, but he is pretty darn close to it, and the fact that Thurmond can even be considered as valuable as him shows how good of a player he is.
Thurmond has said that he wants to re-sign with the Giants which is all the organization should need to hear. Signing him won’t break the bank because he played less than two games last season, but if they can get him back, his deal will likely be a bargain for the Giants.
Having Cromartie on one side, Prince Amukamara back healthy from a torn biceps on the other side, with Thurmond covering the slot would give the Giants a big advantage in pass defense. Thurmond is a really good player who wants to come back, so this one should be a no brainer for Jerry Reese and the Giants’ organization.
