As Deflategate continues to rumble forward, a new story has surfaced that former NFL QB Jeff Blake was quoted saying that footballs are under-inflated all the time and that this is nothing new. The story made headlines on television and was on the front page of almost every major sports website in the country.

Plenty of former quarterbacks have weighed in—Troy Aikman, Fran Tarkenton, Dan Marino. These hall of fame QBs have talked about how a softer ball can help with grip and should be considered cheating. So now on the other side, we have… Jeff Blake?

Jeff Blake is now making national headlines. The same quarterback who hasn’t been in the league for a decade, threw for over 3,000 yards only twice, and had a career record 22 games under .500 in 100 career starts.

It’s not that Blake was a horrible quarterback, he was decent and had his moment in the sun. It’s just that Blake is irrelevant. He is a footnote in NFL history. He’s the player that when he’s mentioned 20 years from now fans go, “Oh yeah, Jeff Blake, I remember him.” In fact, that might be the reaction they are having today when his name resurfaced. When Jeff Blake is worthy of national headlines, it shows that the media is desperate to keep fueling the deflategate fire and that it has simply gone too far.

The NFL is dragging their feet in their investigation, but they are investigating. The New England Patriots might have cheated, but they may not have. The story has gone as far as it can go. The NFL will release it’s finding whenever they care to conclude their investigation and until that happens, the media should wait and react when it’s appropriate.

Jeff Blake? Please, stop the insanity.
