2015 NFL Draft Combine Profile: Oklahoma Wide Receiver Dorial Green-Beckham

Dorial Green-Beckham 2015 NFL Draft

The phrase boom-or-bust is thrown around quite liberally at draft time, but it couldn’t be more applicable in the case of wideout Dorial Green-Beckham. 6-foot-6, 225-pound specimens at receiver don’t grow on trees, but all of that inherent talent could be wasted if the numerous off-field concerns don’t disappear quickly. Maturity is clearly the biggest issue for Green-Beckham entering the pre-draft evaluation process, but his potential is through the roof.

Multiple marijuana offenses and a domestic violence issue where Green-Beckham allegedly shoved a woman down a flight of stairs have clouded all of the positives about the physical freak. If he can’t straighten out his off-field conduct, what has the potential to be a promising NFL career will undoubtedly be short-lived. What the 32 teams around the league interested in employing his services will have to determine is just how likely he is to continue these less than upstanding behaviors.

But looking beyond the off-field concerns, it’s obvious there is a football player with out of this world potential. Green-Beckham has a catch radius that can’t be taught, and his soft hands allow quarterbacks to place the ball in areas where only he can make the reception. Though he has outstanding size and a huge frame, that doesn’t mean there isn’t some serious speed lurking for this long strider. Green-Beckham has an extra gear that allows him to separate from corners before breaking off his route and getting wide open for easy grabs.

Clearly the primary issue here is the interview process and whether teams believe they can trust Green-Beckham to become something more than a headache for the organization. Cases like Josh Gordon only hurt his chances of being a first-round pick, and in many ways that could determine just where he falls in the draft.

While it is quite possible Green-Beckham slides down into Round 2, I just don’t see it given his potential and precedents set in similar cases from the past. Guys like Dez Bryant and Randy Moss were considered problem children coming into the league, and they fell accordingly down into the 20s of the draft. That’s right about where a team like the Baltimore Ravens would love to snag Green-Beckham and add another weapon to Joe Flacco’s arsenal.
