The Carolina Panthers are releasing their franchise's all-time leading rusher. Now free to sign with any team as an unrestricted free agent, let's take a look at the top five potential landing spots for running back DeAngelo Williams.

This of course only happens if DeMarco Murray bolts in free agency – a very real possibility. Behind Murray, there’s not a whole lot of proven depth for the Cowboys. Joseph Randle had a good year, but with only 51 carries the entire season, it’s impossible to know how he would hold up as the featured back over the full 16-game season.

San Diego’s running back position was decimated by injuries in 2014. Starter Ryan Mathews is a free agent and it’s beginning to look like the Chargers will let him walk once free agency begins on March 10. Mike McCoy’s team barely missed out on the playoffs in 2014 and should be looking for a steady and proven back like Williams to stabilize the position in 2015.

The Patriots will surely be one of the top potential landing spots for any veteran running back this offseason. New England did win the Super Bowl last season with no running game to speak of in the playoffs, but Bill Belichick knows he can’t count on that happening again in 2015. A veteran player like Williams is likely to be highly interested in joining a Super Bowl contender like the Patriots.

Ray Rice won’t be running the ball for John Harbaugh’s team in 2015 and while Justin Forsett had a great breakout year in 2014, the Ravens could certainly use another dependable option at running back. Williams fits perfectly with Baltimore’s no-nonsense running style and as one of the favorites in the AFC, the Ravens will be an attractive option for him.

Like with DeMarco Murray and the Cowboys, Williams only ends up in San Francisco if Frank Gore isn’t back in red and gold in 2015. 2014 second rounder Carlos Hyde has yet to prove he can be a No. 1 running back and Kendall Hunter is coming off a season-ending ACL injury. With only question marks behind Gore, the 49ers, who promise to run and run a lot in 2015, are on the lookout for another running back.
