Last season, the Oakland Raiders fielded one of the worst pass rushes in the NFL. That’s why, with the No. 35 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, they choose to select Florida State defensive end Mario Edwards Jr.

The Raiders desperately need help along the defensive line this upcoming season, especially after passing on Leonard Williams in the first round. Edwards is a big, physical defensive end who possesses the talent to emerge as a serious playmaker for Oakland.

Unfortunately, Edwards is also a bit of a boom-or-bust prospect who may never unlock the tremendous amount of potential he displayed from time to time during his college career.

During his 2014 junior season with the Seminoles, Edwards looked like a dominant force on one play, and a non-factor on the next. His motor has been routinely brought into question, which isn’t a good sign for a defensive lineman looking to compete at the NFL level.

Still, the potential is there for him to emerge as a true difference maker opposite Justin Tuck. He has all of the physical tools to develop into a serious edge rusher with the size/strength combo to hold his own against the run as well.

What’s more is Edwards offers the versatility Oakland would love to have along the defensive front. During his time with the Seminoles, he played defensive end, defensive tackle and even saw occasional snaps at linebacker. That’s what a rebuilding defense needs – versatility.

There’s some risk involved with this pick. However, if Edwards plays up to his potential, the Raiders found a serious difference maker early in the second round.
