For the last couple of years, the Oakland Raiders have watched Miles Burris provide them with subpar middle linebacker play. With the addition of Kansas linebacker Ben Heeney in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Raiders have found themselves an option to replace Burris.

When it comes to Heeney, the Raiders are getting an excellent talent with the athleticism, smarts and instincts to make big plays at the next level. Coming off of a first-team All-Big 12 selection, the former Jayhawk excels in coverage with good awareness and fluidity to make plays on the football. Although he isn’t an overly physical defender, he has the toughness to step up and make an impact against the run as well.

The Raiders could also choose to slot him at outside linebacker, giving them more flexibility with Heeney. His coverage skills and lack of downhill tackling ability make him a strong fit on the weak side, especially on passing downs. If Oakland wants to bump Khalil Mack or Sio Moore down to defensive end on passing downs, Heeney can come in and be a reliable option in coverage.

Either way, the Raiders got an excellent asset in the Kansas product, who brings good athleticism and versatility to the linebacker position. No matter where they decided to us him, Heeney should have no problem making an impact in Oakland.

GM Reggie McKenzie is putting together a solid draft class.  Now let’s see if they can put it all together on the field.
