I find it as ironic as a snowblower in Florida how giddy each first-round selection greeted Roger Goodell during the 2015 NFL Draft. Did you see the bear hug from Danny Shelton? It’s amazing how over-the-top each hug, handshake and greeting were executed, given that many of those players will sooner or later be fined by the disciplinarian in chief in the name of “defending the shield.”

Although quarterbacks rarely get their pay docked, I don’t see how Jameis Winston escapes a fine before the end of the 2015 season. I’m all for change and maturity, but comparing NFL discipline to NCAA “slaps on the wrist” is like comparing apples to… crab legs.

4. Randy Gregory — Dallas Cowboys

This is too perfect of a storm. The Dallas Cowboys are the league’s biggest lightning rod and Randy Gregory already owns a record with marijuana. Unless the NFL evolves and “goes green,” Gregory will be losing the other kind of green through severed game checks.

3. Leonard Williams — New York Jets

Leonard Williams is the best defensive end from the draft, but for Williams to succeed, the Jets’ newest addition will need to get to the quarterback. Inevitably, Williams will give Tom Brady a boo-boo in one or both meetings with the New England Patriots and big, bad Roger will have to sign off on a fine.

I’m nominating Shelton purely for selfish reasons. Can you believe how hilariously perplexing it would be if Goodell had to fine his only friend?

1. Shane Ray — Denver Broncos

Until the NFL players union agrees on a more progressive policy, smoking the reefer will still carry disciplinary risk, regardless of where you play. Although Shane Ray could be considered the slightest of offenders, don’t be surprised if Goodell once again swings his draconian axe against any crimes of cannabis.
