By now, everyone has heard about how the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t get a single touchdown pass thrown to a wide receiver last year. Add the fact that this is a team coached by Andy Reid, that’s even more jaw-dropping. The Chiefs need help at the wide receiver position, and one player who can help them is De’Anthony Thomas.

Thomas was used in a variety of ways by the Chiefs during his rookie campaign last season. He split time by lining up at wide receiver and running back, and was also used as a returner for the special teams group. This offseason, the Chiefs decided to move Thomas permanently to receiver.

It’s no question the Chiefs could use the speedster at wide receiver more than at running back, as the group lacks some serious depth behind Jeremy Maclin. The upcoming training camp and preseason will be crucial for a guy like Thomas.

The one thing that may work against Thomas is his size. He is only 5-foot-8, but Reid and Doug Pederson were able to come up with creative packages to get the ball to Thomas. The same should be expected this year, because Thomas has one desirable trait that you cannot teach: Speed. His smaller size will actually help in his elusiveness and make it harder for opponents to tackle him.

Thomas has the ideal size and speed to be a really good slot receiver. The fact he has experience at the running back position should give him confidence he can be good at the slot. He will have to work on his route running in training camp if he wants to work his way up the depth chart. Splitting time last year at different positions limited his practice time.

It wouldn’t be that far-fetched to see the Chiefs use Thomas in a similar role the Green Bay Packers use Randall Cobb. Thomas has the speed that will make it difficult for corners to cover him one-on-one, so he should be able to win a lot of matchups.
